Finding a Church Family

By Sarah

A simple Sunday visit became the beginning of friendship, faith, and a place to call home.

The first time I walked into Estacada Assembly of God, I almost turned around and went back to my car.

I remember sitting in the parking lot for several minutes, wondering if I should even go inside. I was new to the area and did not know anyone. Everything in my life felt unfamiliar. The move had been stressful, and starting over was harder than I expected. I missed my friends, my routine, and the comfort of being somewhere I belonged.

When I finally walked through the doors, I quietly found a seat near the back. I hoped nobody would notice me. Everyone seemed to know each other. People were smiling, talking, and catching up before the service began. While it was nice to see, it also reminded me that I was alone.

As the worship service started, I listened carefully. The music was uplifting, and the message spoke directly to my heart. For the first time in a long while, I felt a sense of peace. It was as if God was reminding me that even though I felt lost, He knew exactly where I was.

After the service, something unexpected happened.

A few people came over and introduced themselves. They did not ask uncomfortable questions or make me feel awkward. They simply welcomed me. One woman invited me to join a small group that met during the week. Another person told me about a church fellowship coming up the following weekend. Their kindness seemed small at the time, but it meant more than they probably realized.

Over the next several weeks, I kept coming back.

I attended the small group, joined a few church events, and slowly began meeting more people. At first, I mostly listened. I was still shy and unsure of myself. But little by little, walls started coming down. I learned names, shared meals, and had conversations that went beyond simple greetings.

The church no longer felt like a building full of strangers. It started feeling like a family.

One thing that stood out to me was how people genuinely cared for one another. When someone was sick, people visited and prayed for them. When a family was struggling, others stepped in to help. When someone celebrated a milestone, the entire church celebrated with them. I had never experienced a community quite like that before.

Several months later, I faced a difficult season in my life. I was overwhelmed, worried, and unsure about what the future would look like. During that time, many people from the church reached out to me. Some sent encouraging messages. Others prayed with me after service. A few simply listened when I needed someone to talk to.

Those moments reminded me that I was not carrying my burdens alone.

God was working through the people around me.

“God sets the lonely in families.”

Psalm 68:6

Looking back now, I can see how much my life has changed since that first Sunday. What began as a nervous visit became one of the greatest blessings in my life. Through this church, I found friendships, encouragement, support, and a deeper relationship with God.

Sometimes I think about that day in the parking lot when I almost decided not to go inside.

If I had driven away, I would have missed so much.

Today, when I see a new visitor walk through the doors, I remember exactly how they might be feeling. I know what it is like to be the new person. That is why I always try to smile, introduce myself, and make them feel welcome.

Because someone once did the same for me.

And because of that simple act of kindness, I found a church family that I now call home.
